April 30, 2009 (Thursday): A regular day again

Theology: Read the last three chapters (The Spirit World, Judgement and Exaltation) and finished Gospel Principles.
Book of Mormon Stories: Read about the brother of Jared, Ether and Moroni-finished the Book of Mormon stories. Moving on to Church History.
Friend Articles
Biography/American History: Studied and talked about The Oregon Trail.
Literature: Read 3 chapters from Great Expectations by Charles Dickens (an abridged version).
Memorization: 12 apostles
Family History: Read several pages about my grandpa's WWII adventures.
Music: Rhythm poem
Geography: India, China, and the Westward expansion of the west (Oregon Trail)
Science: Read two chapters and finished Our Father's World. (Our bodies and senses)
PE/Creative Play: Played in the desert. The kids have love Horatio Hornblower. While they were in the desert they played they were Horatio and cohorts seeking to attack the Spanish forts along the coastline. It was very funny watching them sneak around with their swords and peer over the hills. And watching them run when they "set off" gunpowder. They also enjoyed lots of jumping on the trampoline.

April 13, 2009 (Monday): Moving on to Native Americans

American History: We have moved on to the Native American Indians for a week or two and then we will dive into the Civil War. Today we discussed Indians in general. We used several encyclopedias we checked out from the town library. Luke liked practicing the sign language that was in one of them.
Literature/World History: Read 2 chapters from Greek Myths: Ulysses and the Trojan War by Usborne.
Language Arts: I taught them about Thesaurus and how to use them. We practiced on several words. We also talked about synonyms and antonyms. The Children's Thesaurus that I recently bought from Hastings for cheap is The Harcourt Brace Student Thesaurus. It's a great children's Thesaurus.
Memorization: 12 apostles and the Latter-day prophets
Family History/World War II: Read several pages of Memories of a Flying Tiger. This Family History book recounts ths story of my grandfather fighting the Japanese in China as a "Flying Tiger."
Science: Gravity and Magnets from Science and Technology: Learn How Things Work by Capella
Math: Read Sir Cumference and the Dragon of Pi: A Math Adventure by Cindy Neuschwander

Olivia
Religion: Read a chapter from the Book of Mormon.
Math: Lesson 134 from Saxon 6/5.
Spelling: 1 spell drill
Language Arts: Prepositions review from Easy Grammar.
Writing: Did an Editor in Chief lesson.

Science: Invented an automatic cat food feeder from household items.
Creative Play/Simulations: Held "court" today and Olivia was the judge. The case was whether Jared did in fact steal some of Caleb's Easter candy. The boys each had to submit in writing their side of the case. They also had to orally present their case. In the end the verdict was for the defendant as there was no evidence other than the 6 year old's accusation.
Art: Coloring on paper plates to make faces.

Family History (WWII History): Started a family history book Memories of a Flying Tiger by Leonard Hancock (my grandfather)-about his experiences in China as a gunner during WWII. This is 125 page bound book so it will take us two weeks to read.

Health: Fitness Walking from Eat Well and Keep Moving by Lillian Cheung
Business/Social: We had a Usborne book showing in the afternoon.

Research: WWII aircraft-specifically B-17 bombers that his grandpa trained in. He has a gigantic book-very heavy-that has all the aircraft used in WWII. Very cool. I'm able to talk them a little about these things because in my "former life" (before kids) I was a pilot myself.

02/26/09 (Thur): Dad School

Dad School
American History: They watched the two hour long documentary A More Perfect Union by BYU. This film is about the singing of the Declaration.

Mom School
Business/Public Speaking: The kids participated in an Usborne book show with me this afternoon. They all gave a little speech on their favorite book a couple of different times.
Social: Played with friends during the four hour show.

I'm tired and I can't think so here's what they did in a nutshell. I'm sure I forgot something...sigh...

Olivia : Math lesson, science lesson, Greek Root words test, geography lesson, read Jane Eyre for a long time, played on Infopath, vocabulary word of the day, read a book about the horse Seabiscuit, practiced her vocal solo, and read her Book of Mormon.

Jared: Math lesson, read in the New Testament Reader, practiced the piano, Explode the Code phonics, spell drill, Lego's and wrestling practice.

Luke: Math lesson, Explode the Code phonics, Book of Mormon Reader, 1 hour + silent reading of various things, spell drill, Lego's and wrestling practice.

Caleb: Math game, Explode the Code phonics, spell drill, wrestling practice, and overall extremely naughty.

Family History/American History: From the Draper Manuscripts "Adventure at Fort Boonesbourough" by William Hancock. This recounts a fight with the Indians at Fort Boonesbourough, Kentucky in the late 1700's. Also present with the Hancock brothers fighting the Indians was their friend Daniel Boone.

Science: Muscles from The Kingfisher Science Encyclopedia and we started Animal World: Explore the Living Planet by Capella. This is a question and answer book. We talked about Big Cats, Elephants, Marine Mammals, Birds of Prey, and Monkeys to name a few.
Health: Eating healthy snacks from Chapter 6 Eat Well and Keep Moving by Lilian Cheung
PE: We played baseball and basketball at the church for an hour. We also did a warm-up and stretched. I taught the kids some of these sports basic fundamentals.
Science/Pet Care: Jared and Olivia each have a hamster that they are responsible for. They also take turns caring for our dog, cat and sea monkeys.

You know you're a homeschooler when...

Today in cub scouts we were talking about America. (ABC's of America is the theme). We were playing American J-I-N-G-O which they all loved. This is just Bingo with questions to find out the picture. Anyway...one of the questions was about the Civil War and it mentioned in there that families fought against families. Most of the boys all started talking about some football players that played against each other. (If I understood them). However, Jared (my son) internalized it differently. He said, "Oh, I know like in Macbeth when Macbeth takes out his cousin Duncun. They were on different sides. Is that what you're talking about?"

World History: 2 hours listening to The Story of the World vol. 2.
Science: Sharks by Seymour Simon from the Smithsonian series. We really like these Smithsonian series. This is the first one we've read but we've looked at the pictures from a lot of them that we've checked out from the library. Caleb said, "They are so scary!" It was a book about sharks!
Life Skills: Folding laundry together.
PE: Went swimming twice.
Family Life: Played with our cousins and went out to dinner.
Reading: We take turns reading all of the above material everyday.
Science/Pet Care: Jared and Olivia each have a hamster that they are responsible for. They also take turns caring for our dog, cat and sea monkeys.
Service: Made food for a funeral.

Olivia
Religion: Read a chapter in the Book of Mormon.
Reading: Read for one hour in Jane Eyre.
Life Skills: Homemade macaroni and cheese again.

Jared
Religion: Read a chapter in his Old Testament Reader.
Free Reading: Read 3 chapters in Eragon.

Luke
Music: Practiced his piano lesson.
Free Reading: Read for an hour in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by CS Lewis.

Caleb
Math:
Did one math page from his workbook.
PE: Played Wii Sports for 30 min.

01/15/09: Sleep over party

We had another great day today. The kids love learning and reading. I couldn't have a better "job" than doing what I do. I am a mom! Today the kids put up their play-tents that they received from Christmas from one of their grandmas. They've been playing with them since Christmas but today they decided they were going to sleep in them. They are all lined out each in a tent and are listening to some Power Tales as we speak. Happy kids.

Movie: Watched The Empire Strikes Back (I know, I know they need to not watch movies after dinner. They have really wanted to watch the original series again. They watched them out of order, but they should be good for a while now. In our house the original Star Wars series are classics).

Character Biographies: Power Tales: George Washington, Thomas Edison and Benjamin Franklin.

Deanna: Scriptures, journal, Teachings of the Presidents of the Church: Joseph Smith (1 lesson), piano (I'm usually on it for an hour everyday-broken up into 2 or so segments), violin (I tried the simplified hymns today. I really need to have a lesson from someone before my technique-which I'm sure is off-becomes a habit), recorder for about 20 min with Olivia, Goodreads reviews, read 2 chapters from The Iliad by Homer, did a lesson for my BYU college Geography class, and read A Tale of Two Cities by Dickens for 1 1/2 hours.
Alex:Left at 5 AM this morning for Utah to set up one of his tax offices. He'll be home late...I don't know what he listened to day or what's he's read....

Computers: Created on the Art program and somehow figured out how to change all the pictures for every one's users as well as the "passwords." He thought he was pretty sneaky.
