Olivia's Creative Writing Partial Story

This morning when I came out of my bedroom to start making breakfast Olivia was busy at her laptop. I asked her what she was doing and she told me she was writing a story. I asked her what it was about and she said it was just a silly story and she was making it up as she went along. She said she was just writing it for fun. She did let me read it. I thought it was pretty good for that early in the morning. I talked her into letting me post it. It's far from complete but I thought there were some good things going on it it. Such as big words, descriptive sentences, and some creativity. I haven't edited it at all. I'm proud of her and I hope she keeps writing. I thought it was a perfect love of learner example...

It all began the morning that Hallie was born. The howling, the sorrow, the pain. Hallie had died only a few hours after she was born. Mother had been miserable since that day.

Loraine thought these things over. And tried to think of a way to help mother. The only things that she could do that were on the farm were: feeding the chickens, making breakfast, and so on. But she felt intent to help her mother. She knew that even little things helped and that I was her duty to help. “Can you come, milk the cow for me?”
Asked. Nadine
“I suppose so” She replied indignantly

As she milked Missy the family milk cow. She decided that after breakfast she would walk into town, and try to find a job. She hoped that this would be a benefit for her family.

With breakfast over, Loraine told her mother of her plans. Her mother replied. “Thank you” tears coming to her eyes.

She bustled into town and right as she got into town there was an earthquake! Loraine braced herself against a stone wall. As she watched, many people fell to the ground. Dying. Many went unconscious others fainted. Every one got hurt except for Loraine. She knew that this was a once in a lifetime chance. She went from person to person helping them stay alive, helping them breath and bandaging there wounds. She knew that if she helped them she would get paid and would have money, lots of money. But after she helped, all she got was kindness!

Dr. Aardsma's Spelling Drills

I've had numerous search hits to my site about Dr. Aardsma's Spell Drill in the short time I've had my homeschooling blog. So I thought I'd do a specific post on them.

I love them! For our family it's a great alternate medium to break up repetitious book work. They are a "computer game."

Here's how it works: You enter your name, grade and desired spelling list. (Abeka, Bob Jones, etc. It has about 7 lists). Once you've signed in it stores your name, "grade", spelling list and how you do each time. If you are in 4th grade you will receive 20 questions. The narrator gives you the word, then he repeats it in a sentence. You have two chances to spell it correctly. After that it will then show you the correct spelling and then you have to try to do it again until you get it correct. After several times of correctly spelling the same word from various spell drills that word is dropped. Each time you do a spell drill new words are added. But if you are a 4th grader you only ever get 20 words per session.

I enjoy it because the child is not endlessly quizzed on words they know and new words are given as they progress. Therefore, they can go through as quickly as they are able. They love the challenge to get a word they haven't been getting right. And like I mentioned early it just breaks the learning up into different mediums. A bonus for elementary children!

There is nothing flashy about this program. It rather boring appearance wise. It's simple and straight to the point. This is not an arcade game at all.

I hope this helps. Please ask questions in the comment box if you have them and I'll be happy to answer them!

Today, among other things, we had a piano recital. Jared and I played a piano solo. Olivia was invited to sing since she's been having voice lessons. I played because my cardinal rule of mothering is I won't "make" my kids do anything I'm not willing to do myself. In TJEd terms that would be "Inspire Not Require." The kids did great!

Today I took a teacher in service day! I went to the temple. How much more inspired can I be then going there! Olivia and Jared went to Kristen's and had their first fall horse lessons. Olivia read some, but she always reads. She's like me. This afternoon after "school" we are having a play date for them with some kids. It was nice not doing anything. We go through so much material during the day with no breaks. It seems like we always end up with one day a week that we don't do much school. Maybe all the no recesses and lunch breaks add up to a day off! : )

Olivia's hamster report

Samuel Peanut Sutter
A Report on my hamster.

My hamsters’ name is Sammy (he has two names, the other one is Peanut). It’s your choice of what you call him. Sammy is a male hamster. He does not like people except for me; he will eat, sleep, drink and run in front of me. He is only a few weeks old. He loves to run on his wheel and to sleep in his food bowl. It is very cute to watch. I love him. He is tan and white with a few stripes of dark gray. He LOVES to play in his tube and to sleep in it. Sammy also hides in his tube. He is a fun hamster to watch.

I love My Hamster.
TO BE CONTINUED...

He's hiding in the upper left corn tube.

He hides in the tube when ever some one comes into the room so you can't catch him. Or at least for all of us but Olivia.

Jared's Hamster Report

MY HAMSTER
by Jared

His name is Energy Dude. He is brown and white. My hamster is a runner, he runs fast. He keeps me up all night because he is always running on his wheel. Energy Dude loves his running ball. He does not like Hank, my dog, or my cat King Tut. I feed Energy Dude hamster food that I bought from Pet Smart. I also give him chopped up carrots. He sleeps behind his ramp all day long.

The End.

This is Jared hamster. While Jared was at piano lessons Hank decided to go check out Energy Dude. He tore his cage apart. The hamster got away fortunately and fortunately we found him. While we were cleaning his cage we took a quick picture of him. He'd been sleeping/hiding when we took the pix before with Jared. The picture is messed up, but it's the only we could get because Energy Dude doesn't like to hold still.

Jared beside his cage. The hampter is sleeping and hissed at us when we tried to get him. Such a fun pet! : )

Daily Schedule for 9/12/08

Today Jared took a sick day. He was miserable all night with the crud going around. So Olivia and I took the opportunity to have a "skills day." We are going to "town" (45 min)after school to stock up and run LOTS of errands. So our life skills revolved around that trip. With gas prices as high as they are I don't make as many trips to town as I use to. I was also in and out all day helping to judge over at the High School for homecoming week anyway. They aren't doing a whole lot over there at the school either so I don't feel so bad!

Olivia's life skills:

Learned how and paid all our bills today on line.
Balanced the check book.
Figured out our tithing and offerings.
Babysat two little kids for an hour.
Measured Hank's (the dog) neck to see what size of a collar he needs.
Called Pet Smart to find out their hours and some questions with the hamsters.
Decided what dinners we wanted for the next little while.
Made a grocery shopping list.
Made a list off all the other stops we needed to make and what we needed at each store.
Figured out the order of our stops to be the most gas and time effective.

That's what I remember anyway it was a good low key-high learning day for her. She was very happy and the best part was that she was doing Math and she didn't even mind! To quote, "The calculator is my friend."

So some of our stops today include the library, the music store and Pet Smart. Think of our family when we come home with rodents! At least the kids are paying for them.
