03/10/09 (Tue): Ears
Today our big excitement was that "someone" trying to be helpful jabbed Caleb in the ear with a qutip during our voice lesson. They thought they were helping by getting the wax out of Caleb's ear because Caleb keeps saying he can't hear out of that ear (but he has a headcold). The poor child that did it cried the rest of the afternoon because they were so remorseful. Caleb's ear bleed a little bit and after some rest and motrin he was doing lots better. Meaning he was fighting with Luke like usual and telling me he was fine and didn't need to go to the doctor. But our voice lesson and piano lesson were quite long because of all the interruptions. Good thing our voice teacher is so patient with us. She never knows what the state of affairs will be here when she shows up!

Memorization: All the states of the USA alphabetically and The books in the Old Testament.
Family History: Read a biography of John Calvin Hancock written by my aunt.
Greek: Learned the first four letters of the Greek alphabet.

Health: Proper hygiene-bathing and brushing your teeth
Science/Pet Care: Jared and Olivia each have a hamster that they are responsible for. They also take turns caring for our dog, cat and sea monkeys.

Creative Writing: Editing his story on the computer. He also learned about story organization in a workbook he's using. He loves it. It's called "Just Write."
Language Arts: He used the dictionary several times to look of words he didn't know how to spell. He uses the dictionary A Spelling Dictionary for Beginning Writers by Gregory Hurray. You can get it through http://www.ldfr.com/ My children have always enjoyed this early reader dictionary. He also looked up words he didn't know from his geography lesson in Macmillan's Dictionary for Children.
Art: Drew and colored a picture.
Book on Tape: 1 hour of Brisingr. We finally got this from the library. We've been on the waiting list for many months.
Creative Play: Lego's
PE: Ran/walked on the treadmill for 20 min.

01/15/09: Sleep over party
We had another great day today. The kids love learning and reading. I couldn't have a better "job" than doing what I do. I am a mom! Today the kids put up their play-tents that they received from Christmas from one of their grandmas. They've been playing with them since Christmas but today they decided they were going to sleep in them. They are all lined out each in a tent and are listening to some Power Tales as we speak. Happy kids.

I really need to have a lesson from someone before my technique-which I'm sure is off-becomes a habit), recorder for about 20 min with Olivia, Goodreads reviews, read 2 chapters from The Iliad by Homer, did a lesson for my BYU college Geography class, and read A Tale of Two Cities by Dickens for 1 1/2 hours.
Alex:Left at 5 AM this morning for Utah to set up one of his tax offices. He'll be home late...I don't know what he listened to day or what's he's read....

Movie: Watched The Empire Strikes Back (I know, I know they need to not watch movies after dinner. They have really wanted to watch the original series again. They watched them out of order, but they should be good for a while now. In our house the original Star Wars series are classics).

Character Biographies: Power Tales: George Washington, Thomas Edison and Benjamin Franklin.

Deanna: Scriptures, journal, Teachings of the Presidents of the Church: Joseph Smith (1 lesson), piano (I'm usually on it for an hour everyday-broken up into 2 or so segments), violin (I tried the simplified hymns today. I really need to have a lesson from someone before my technique-which I'm sure is off-becomes a habit), recorder for about 20 min with Olivia, Goodreads reviews, read 2 chapters from The Iliad by Homer, did a lesson for my BYU college Geography class, and read A Tale of Two Cities by Dickens for 1 1/2 hours.
Alex:Left at 5 AM this morning for Utah to set up one of his tax offices. He'll be home late...I don't know what he listened to day or what's he's read....

Mom School Meeting
Today I had a little heart to heart with the children as we started our Mom School. I talked to them about what I expected out of our core phase children (as well as all of them). I had realized that I had never clearly defined my expectations. They were not anything new, but just having a conversation about it was important for them. My younger two looked at me and said, "What's core phase?" Huh? What? I guess we haven't talked about it in a while. Our family's list of core phase "requirements" (or expectations) is found in our core book in the D&C 88 (out of our core book). Of course these are expectations for over their lifetime. But it's a base for them to come back to throughout their life... (Please remember this is the "gospel" according to Deanna).
Core phase (from the Thomas Jefferson Educational model aka TJED) can be summarized as a stage (around 0-8/10ish) were the most important "lessons" the children focuses on are true/false, good/bad and right/wrong. An understanding of appropriate behavior and the demonstration of this behavior is the most important training. Also within this stage the basic skills of the 3 R's are taught: Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic.
I also asked them if I was reading to much to them or things they didn't want to hear about anymore. (They've always picked most of the books). Olivia and Luke said that while they liked science they didn't want to do it everyday. Jared said he didn't want to hear about history everyday. Jared wants to hear about Science everyday. Olivia wants to read family history and general history everyday. Luke wants to read history and stories (like Narnia) everyday. Ha! So we talked about missions in life a little bit. I pointed out that Jared's mission in life will most likely involve a heavy amount of Math and Science (this is no surprise to anyone as we talk about everyday). So it was important that we spend a little time every day on Science for Jared. Luke is probably going to grow up and be an author and so he needs the history and the stories to generate ideas and fill his head. That's important for his mission. Family is very important to Olivia (she's set a goal to memorize her personal pedigree chart) and so we need to read that also. They readily agreed they would be more than willing to continue learning about the subjects they were not as interested in for the sake of their siblings. In the end the only thing they wanted changed was that they want our character book switched every other day with the Children's Friend. Laugh out loud! They love hearing me read to them! Yeah! Today our Mom School lasted three hours and they were just as happy as can be.
I also talked about the three languages that were important to us that they learned well. 1. Language of English (self-explanatory) 2. Language of Math (besides the obvious reasons I believe that Math teaches you the skill of problem solving which transfers over to reading were you can following logic and the line of thoughts of others) and 3. Language of Music (Music is full of patterns if you look. Learning Music will improve your Math skills. Really. Trust me). I told them of course it would be wonderful if we could learn Spanish, Latin, Greek, Hebrew and Sign Language, but for now these top three were what I felt were the most important languages for our family.
Giving your kids knowledge empowers them to make their own personal "right" choices. And quotes from the "good books" seals the authority. We are blessed with wonderful children. They work hard to be good. I am proud of their choices each day to improve and learn. They motivate us.

11/11/08: Eruption
Today Mom School lasted 3 1/2 hours. Lots of reading! They didn't want me to stop. They are still in the baking mood. They both wanted to make cookies today. We also started attending a 6 week community music class. I am going to be the pianist for it. Inspire not require right! Jared didn't want to sing. So he played on the play ground. The other 3 participated though.

Mom School
I just wanted to write a little blip about mom school (or whatever you may want to call it) to all the home school mom's that check out my blog. Mom school is a key ingredient from Oliver and Rachele DeMille's "Core and Love of Learning." Mom school is our favorite time of the day. My kids sit at my feet and beg me to read more and more everyday. I love the opportunity to read out of numerous books and share what's mine, the things I'm passionate about and the things I want them to learn. They also enjoy picking out the books that we read a loud together.
We start out mom school with our prayer and pledge. We then do theology. This year we are using Preach My Gospel that is put out by the LDS church. I suspect we will keep using it over and over. It has a great outline to follow. Why reinvent the wheel? We follow that up with some scripture history and some various articles about character. I get these from magazines or fairy tale books or both.
After that it's free game. I usually go over 3-7 topics. I start my days with personal prayer and find out what I should cover in mom school. I find that we like having variety every day instead of always being regimented to doing specific things everyday-like science. We will end up doing it a couple of times a week though and we seem to like that. We do always read a living book biography from history. This year we are talking about American History and are going through it chronologically. I am seeing my children springing up into little patriots right in front of me. They love America and they have loved learning about the great men and women of America's history. Other subjects we've covered are Family History biographies (a big hit), memorization of various things, Geography, Science, Spanish, random bio's of famous people, abridged Shakespeare plays (Lamb's Tales), cultural arts, language arts, poetry, and classic literature to name a few ideas. (You can see my Good Reads lists to see our specific books we are using this year).
I find we usually go for 1 1/2 to 2 hours. It depends on the day and how much time we have. I think that if we could and my voice could hold out we would go all day. The kids will bring things to do quietly on the floor while I read or they just snuggle up next to me. This has been an amazing bonding time for us. We have great discussions and I feel I'm closer to my children than I've ever been.
I also want to say when I first starting reading out loud to my kids I could barely squeak out 15 minutes before I had to stop because my throat hurt. Over time my throats gotten tougher.
Anyway kudos to Mom School!
