May 28, 2009 (Thursday)

Let's see... today....

Jared mowed the back yard. Jared made homemade pancakes. Oh, and the kids played golf again. We had baseball practice. We played with our cousins for a little while. We played at grandma's.

Olivia wrote a paper on healthy drinks, she did a math page, she made peanut butter cookies, and read her scriptures.

I went to the temple, read my scriptures, went visiting teaching, "finished up" (for now) inputting Alex's family history on http://www.new.familysearch.com/, sewed a quilt with my mom, and read Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry.

Alex read his scriptures, finished Artemis Fowl #3, went to Boise today and came home late. The carburetor (or radiator-or something) blew and so he ended up being stuck at a mechanics for many hours and some of his appointment had to be rescheduled.

Summer plans

My plans for the summer are (per the kid's suggestions):
  • Have a short devotional in the morning when we can.
  • Do lots of science projects.
  • Learn Spanish with the kids. (We have Power Glide, Jr.).
  • Do a little math a couple times a week.
  • Listen to lots of books on tape while we are driving.
  • Have lots of picnics.
  • Take swimming lessons.
  • Olivia has a horse project for 4-H.
  • Have fun.

So that's the plan as of right now. We'll see how life goes....

Olivia: Read a 100 pages in The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin, went to her scholar school to discuss the book, and played with a friend for a couple of hours.

Jared: Wrote a book review about Johnny Tremaine, did a geography worksheet, mowed the lawn, vacuumed, played golf outside, and played basketball.

Luke: Wrote a report on Crazy Horse, wrote about why he likes baseball and colored a picture, dumped the trash, cleaned up the playroom, and played golf & basketball.

All: Today we babysit some cousins again. We played hard all day with them. We also went swimming at the swimming hole with them. We also had baseball practice tonight. The kids had fun coloring pictures about various things I googled.

Olivia: Read 50 pages in Benjamin Franklin's Autobiography, wrote a book report about A Wrinkle in Time, wrote a paper about her tomato plants, did two math pages, did a workbook page about the hazards of smoking, and she watched the movie Much Ado About Nothing.

Jared: Drew a picture of his favorite foods, learned about safety signs, did two math pages, colored a picture of the solar system, wrote a report about his favorite science experiment, did a coloring page about the layers of the earth and wrote about his experiences with baseball and wrestling this year.

Luke: Did a spell drill, colored a picture about the planets, did a worksheet about harmful substances, wrote a report about sharks, did a coloring page about the layers of the earth and worked on his story on the computer.

May 25, 2009 (Monday): Happy Memorial Day!

Happy Memorial Day!!!

We enjoyed a Memorial Day Cemetery service, garden planting, and a barbecue.

For part of our Family Home Evening we updated our family mission plan.

May 21 & 22, 2009 (Thursday and Friday): Was I suppose to post?

So the public school in our small community finished up this week. And before I knew what had happened Olivia spent 3 straight days at her cousins and two of them were with us for 3 straight days. What fun they had! What little we accomplished!

Thursday we went swimming and had baseball. Friday we recovered after they went home. Jared slept for hours!

Olivia put in a serious amount of horse riding and "cowgirling." (yes, I know that's not a word) So my cousin (the kids they play with our my cousin's kids) is the next thing to a professional roper. So they spend a lot of time at roping's and a lot of time with their horses at home practicing. So Olivia spends a lot of time running the chutes and having the time of her life! When she finally decided to move back home she spent a lot of time singing. She also started The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin her next scholar book.

Jared did nothing of educational value. He played hard with his cousin. They spent hours on Lego's with them building.

Luke spent a lot of time working on his new story. It blows my mind that all he wants to do is write. He's 8! He also played hard and played with Lego's.

Caleb had a cousin his age and they lived the high life as well. I had some seriously happy children.

Alex and I went on a date to the temple on Friday night. We had our meeting with our mentor for Oedipus at Colonus by Sophocles. I studied two chapters in my American History class and read Rebekah by Orson Scott Card. I've also been practicing the organ because I have to play in sacrament meeting again this week. Alex finished Oedipus since he hadn't yet. He's still working on The Law by Bastiat. (He's read it before and really likes it). He's also still working on Master and Commander. And we've also had some good solid scripture reading.

May 20, 2009 (Wednesday)

Today Alex stayed late so we hung out with him in the morning. Olivia had scholar school, we had scouts, Activity Days, Young Women's and a book club. We ended the day split with our cousins. We'd gained two kids and lost one for the night. Another fun, busy Wednesday.

Olivia
Olivia finished Robinson Crusoe. She played with some homeschooling friends for an hour. She went to scholar school. She went to activity days. She practiced goat tying (a rodeo sport), she rode horses and she ran the "chutes" while her cousins roped. She is spending the night with them. Olivia loves going to her cousins!

Jared
Jared did two math lessons, a spell drill, a Mad Libs paper, practiced his recital piece, read a lesson in the McGuffy Reader and read a chapter in the Doctrine and Covenants Reader. He also went to scouts where they played baseball. Jared is enjoying a fun filled evening with some cousins here at home.

Luke
Luke did some math lessons, did 5 pages in his Explode the Code book, a spell drill, and read some McGuffy lessons. He also had scouts. He is also enjoying time here with his cousins.

Caleb
Caleb did several pages in a creative writing workbooks ("Mom, I love doing this book! Can I do more?"), did a spell drill, did a couple of pages in Explode the Code, did a math workbook page, practiced his telling time skills, read a phonics reader, read a McGuffy Reader lesson and read a couple of verses in the Book of Mormon. He hung out with us at scouts and played baseball with us. He is also enjoying his cousins.

To Show Parent Core/Love of Learner/Scholar here are some things we modeled to the children today...
Deanna: Scriptures, journal, word of the day, read a chapter in a Hyrum Smith biography, finished Sarah by Orson Scott Card, went to a book club and discussed Freckles and went to Young Women's.
Alex: Scriptures, read in The Law by Bastiat, word of the day, went to work, he's listening to Master and Commander and he visited some people for his church calling.

May 19, 2009, (Tuesday): SWIM

Today we went swimming! The weather has been so nice this week! We packed a picnic lunch and went to a canyon lake and played and swam all afternoon. In the morning since we were in town we went to the library and we got our new swimming suits for the year.

We had baseball practice tonight. We were happy we finally had good enough weather to practice!

On the way to town and the lake Olivia read lots in her Robinson Crusoe book. Jared decided he was going to learn how to read a map and spent the whole day "navigating" me with the city map. Luke and Caleb wrote in a notebook about what we were doing and they drew maps of how to get there.

Alex was in Boise all day. I stared Sarah by Orson Scott Card and finished another chapter in my American History class.

The kids had a fabulous day!

The Rhythm Poem

When I was in 5th grade my teacher taught me this poem. I have always remembered parts of it. Since our family moved back to my hometown I am now good friends with my 5th grade teacher. I asked her for this poem and she obliged me. I also had her teach this to "my young women" for an activity we had that had to do with Choice and Accountability. I have since taught it to my children. We clap it out. I don't know who wrote this poem. This is the poem as I have it....

Rhythm Poem
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

Be choosy * * When you choose a choice
Be decisive when deciding a decision * * *
Don't be like mannequins and ladyquins * *
Letting others put you in to positions * * *
Don't be like a puppet on a string
Letting others make you do the things you do.
Controlling every action to their satisfaction
And speaking every single word for you.
Don't go through like a sha dow
Following someone everywhere he goes
Never moving independently
And letting others * step on your toes.
Don't be like a mirror on the wall
A copycat, a polished imitator
Reflecting everything that passes by
A duplicator, an impersonator
Think for yourself! Be a leader!
The product of your own composition.
Be choosy! When you choose a choice
Be decisive when deciding a decision.

May 6, 2009 (Wednesday): On the move

Another busy Wednesday. In the morning I attended the temple while Alex and the kids did some school work. Twenty minutes after I got home we left again. We dropped Olivia off for scholar school a little early and then went back to town for some more state testing. This time it was for the little boys. They did great. I know most homeschoolers are against state testing, but we are not. We do not study for the test however like the public school. (blah, blah, blah-anyway). Then we picked Olivia up and came home just in time for the Primary Activity where I was asked to help. Then tonight Alex and I were off to mutual. Alex is in the new Bishopric now so we both get to go on Wednesday nights. The kids were invited to their cousins out at the farm/ranch while we were at mutual and they played hard and long and came home tired.

Olivia: Math lesson, editing lesson, classical roots test, vocabulary word of the day, grammar lesson, spell drill, reading in Robinson Crusoe, attended scholar class and went to the primary activity.

Jared: Math lesson, multiplication drill, spell drill, cursive handwriting, listened to 3/4 of Peter and the Starcatchers on CD, did his piano lesson, took a state reading test and went to the primary activity.
