March 27, 2009 (Friday): Social Fun

So we ended up taking another day off today to just relax. How sweet it is! I need to remember next year to take spring break the same week as our small town. Everyone wanted to do stuff with us this week because they didn't have anything going on.

This morning we went up to the church and played in the gym for several hours with their cousins and some friends. They jump roped, played baseball, played tag, duck-duck goose and a host of other fun games. They were very tired. Aunt Becky took them through a killer warm-up of running, stretching and foot drills. (She's a track/cross-country coach and she means business!) : )

In the afternoon they played here at home. The boys are enjoying writing stories and illustrating them, so they spent a lot of time doing that. They also watched some science videos. Olivia made cookies and cards for her primary presidency that was just released and we delivered them. She's such a good girl. How did I get so lucky? She and I also made dinner for a family that had a funeral tomorrow. A friend also came over for several hours to visit with me. Jared also finished his last CD of Brisingr. He loved it.

In the evening the kids went to their friends house while their parents, Alex and I went to our Greek class and our class on the Odyssey. We are learning so much! We are having great fun also. I'm so lucky to have a wonderful husband that likes learning things with me. We're fortunate also to have good friends that are just like us and like to talk about books, politics, economics, history, social trends, and classical languages. (think D & C 88:78-79)

It was good end to the week. We definitely look forward to next week when we can get in the groove again. We are ready for some structure again!

March 26, 2009 (Thursday): Were we suppose to have school today?

Well, we didn't. It has been totally great doing nothing! Haw! Our cousins did leave by mid-afternoon. So the kids played hard for most of the day. They completely enjoyed themselves. I think it was a good break for them. Jared did write/type a story and illustrate it though. That's a break through!

I read a book, "The Uglies" by Scott Westerfeld. It was brain candy and I'll leave it at that. It was nice to chill out. I have my monthly Young Women's interview with the Bishop tonight. We might just have to take tomorrow off-for fun. We'll see. I'm sure I'll be chomping at the bit.

03/25/09 (Wednesday): A House of Chaos

Today we have had our cousins over since early this morning and they are staying until tomorrow. Fun, chaos, fun, chaos.

This is the first time in a very long time that I haven't had a lot to do. (Besides chase the two year old down occasionally). Most of the time if we don't "do school" we are running off somewhere doing something "school" related. Today however, the kids just played and I had the whole day off. Very weird. I didn't have to clean, I always stay up on that so there wasn't anything to do there. The house will need some serious help tomorrow after they leave though. There are toys everywhere!

Olivia had her scholar class and she really liked it again. I'm glad she's chosen to participate. She's learning and understanding a lot. Who would of thought a ten year old would "get" Walden?

I worked on my Usborne order, hung out with a friend while we waited for Olivia to finish her class, read 9 chapters and finished the book and questions for the Odyssey, and worked on some Greek. I also was able to study my scriptures extra long today. Very nice. Can a day be any better?

Olivia's essay

Here's an essay Olivia wrote. I couldn't believe she wrote it about me. So this is for all your homeschooling moms that don't think you're making a difference even though you know you are doing the right thing...cheers to you!

The Person I admire

I chose to do this report on my mother because she has had the greatest influence on me and my life. She helps me so much and I am so thankful to her for home schooling me, I have learned so much from her. For instance, instead of learning that George Washington was the father of our country, instead I know every detail of his life. I would know nothing without her, or I would be in public school and wouldn't know hardly anything! She makes each day worth living and gives me hope. What would life be like without her?

I admire my mother. She is loving and kind. I love her so much. She is the type of mother anyone would want. I also have three brothers. How she keeps up with all of hooligans I don't know! But I know that she loves me and that she will always protect me.A person is supposed to be remembered by their characteristic and their life. Let me tell you that my mother has it all. Serving her children is important to her. I will always remember her as the best person that I EVER met.

She always tells me that I can do anything that I want to do. She tells me I can accomplish anything. I believe her, I can do anything that I want to. For instance, she says that I can make it to American Idol show! And she gives me hope. She gives me hope for a wonderful life yet to come.

When we come in from playing outside she always has a hot dinner on the table. When someone needs dinner she makes it without hesitation! For instance, a few weeks ago she felt like she needed to give her best friend dinner because she had just cracked her rib and couldn't cook.

Hard work never stops in our home. Hard work, love, perseverance and integrity are her standards, and are the standards that I will always remember her by.She always is ready to help anyone in need. For instance, if someone needs a ride some where she will give it.My Mother is so kind and gentle. If I am sick she always takes care of me. For instance if I have been throwing up then she goes to the store and buys sprite for me.She always makes sure that good music is playing quietly in the background. We love celtic, classical, patriotic and
religious music. I know that she expects so much from me and I will try my best to serve her, and give her back all of these years of hard work! I wish I could give her everything back in return. How can you? I will always remember my mother as a kind, loving person.

Thinking of my mother I realize how much she does for me, more then anyone I know. She makes every day worth living. She also helps me to be my best.
My mother is the person I admire. Our home is kept beautiful because of her hard work! She deserves so much more then what she gets.

Life is very complete! Mothers are the BEST!!!!! I am with the most loving person on earth dailey! How lucky am I?

Mother, I love you!!!

So Olivia decided she wanted to take a scholar class! She's super excited! We went to the first one today. They will be discussing Walden by Thoreau for the next month or two. She likes it so far. She has an oral assignment for next week. She spent a lot of time reading today and she was taking notes. Olivia also had a current dictionary out and she had the hefty 1828 dictionary out. She's such a good girl. I'm proud of her for making big kid choices, but it's kind of sad. My kids are growing up!

The class meets weekly. I really like the teacher. He teaches at the Commonwealth school also. She has 7 people in her class.

03/10/09 (Tue): Ears

Today our big excitement was that "someone" trying to be helpful jabbed Caleb in the ear with a qutip during our voice lesson. They thought they were helping by getting the wax out of Caleb's ear because Caleb keeps saying he can't hear out of that ear (but he has a headcold). The poor child that did it cried the rest of the afternoon because they were so remorseful. Caleb's ear bleed a little bit and after some rest and motrin he was doing lots better. Meaning he was fighting with Luke like usual and telling me he was fine and didn't need to go to the doctor. But our voice lesson and piano lesson were quite long because of all the interruptions. Good thing our voice teacher is so patient with us. She never knows what the state of affairs will be here when she shows up!

Our Readers

TJEd says they'll choose to read classics some day. We are just suppose to inspire them and give them the tools they need. I'm happy to say the process is working in our home!

Olivia (age 10) just finished Jane Eyre-her first real classic. And that's not a little book people! It's over 500 pages in small print written in early 1800 English. Way to go Olivia!

Jared (age 9) just finished Eragon-his first non-twaddle book. Yeah! It took him 2 months but he persevered. That was 497 pages to be exact.

Luke (age 8) just finished The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe-his first non-twaddle book also.

So take heart moms it'll work!

Spring Break?

So I guess we're taking spring break this week? Or not. We've been to Vegas and back this week. The kids really loved "The Tournament of Kings." They were sick most of the time however and confined to the the room. They did watch a lot of PBS though.

We went to a funeral today. Our house is freezing, but the temp is starting to rise. It went from being unregistered to a blissful 52 degrees the last time I checked.

Tomorrow, if my fingers are dethawed we might have some school. If not we will continue to be wrapped up in blankets and counting our blessings, which are many!

(See the family blog for pictures).
