Today Alex was home all day so the kids enjoyed working with him too! He took them all out to shoot their bows, he helped them with their writing lessons that they wanted to do and played games with them.

Caleb: Played lots of Raz-kids, played several Happy Phonics games, helped write a letter to his new pen pal, addressed an envelope, read his scriptures, played with the addition and subtraction wrap-ups, read books with me including learning about insects, fish, birds and big cats.

Luke: Read his scriptures, started an essay about freedom, wrote a letter to his new pen pal, addressed an envelope, practiced the piano, played an Happy Phonics game, listened to a Magic Tree House book on tape, played with his Lego's, played ping pong and did some reading.

Jared: Read his scriptures, wrote a letter to his new pen pal, addressed an envelope, practiced the piano, listened to a book on tape for a short while, played with Lego's, played a rounding math game, and sewed and worked on some bags for his detective/spy things.

Olivia: Read her scriptures, reading in The Real George Washington, memorizing the Declaration on Independence (has it all memorized, just working on a few words), wrote two emails to pen pals, worked on her Lending.com account for investing, wrote an essay for "fun" about a horse, practiced the piano, and went on a walk.

Deanna: Scriptures, Journal, practiced the piano, helped my brother with something for a couple of hours, played ping pong, took a nap (because I could, haha), and read in the Spiritual Lives of the Great Composers.

Alex: Scriptures, stayed home and worked, played ping pong and went to Stake Standards Night on a Bishopric Assignment.

Luke wrote this during church yesterday. Alex and I are far from poem writers. I'm not sure where he gets the urge.

September 9, 2009 (Wednesday): It's writing time

I can't even begin to tell you how painfully screwed up our day was. Later on I realized half the things we forgot. I don't think I was functioning on a full brain level today. That's okay though! Luke and Olivia started a ten-week writing course that's 2 1/2 hours long. We thought it was in the afternoon, but found out it was this morning. Jared went to Salt Lake with Alex to take Alex's sister to the MTC....

American History: We have moved on to the Native American Indians for a week or two and then we will dive into the Civil War. Today we discussed Indians in general. We used several encyclopedias we checked out from the town library. Luke liked practicing the sign language that was in one of them.
Literature/World History: Read 2 chapters from Greek Myths: Ulysses and the Trojan War by Usborne.
Language Arts: I taught them about Thesaurus and how to use them. We practiced on several words. We also talked about synonyms and antonyms. The Children's Thesaurus that I recently bought from Hastings for cheap is The Harcourt Brace Student Thesaurus. It's a great children's Thesaurus.
Memorization: 12 apostles and the Latter-day prophets
Family History/World War II: Read several pages of Memories of a Flying Tiger. This Family History book recounts ths story of my grandfather fighting the Japanese in China as a "Flying Tiger."

In the end the verdict was for the defendant as there was no evidence other than the 6 year old's accusation.

April 2, 2009 (Thur): Practice makes perfect!

Today we spent the day having a wonderful core phase day. The kids read their scriptures. In the morning the kids read lots of books. The boys worked on science projects and had great fun. Caleb worked on some Explode the Code.

Luke continued to write a way on his story. I wonder how many 8 year old boys wake up early because they are so excited to get to the computer to work on their latest story? I have to kick him off at the end of the day too. He's learning to use a dictionary and knows the word processor program down solid.

In the midst of some very happy kids I practiced the piano the entire day (for the play). We had another killer round of 4 1/2 hours of play practice. At the end of the day we read scriptures and read four more chapters of Fablehaven. So good! We need to find some more high action, fun books the kids like. This 525 page book is going to end to soon!

Olivia's essay

Here's an essay Olivia wrote. I couldn't believe she wrote it about me. So this is for all your homeschooling moms that don't think you're making a difference even though you know you are doing the right thing...cheers to you!

The Person I admire

I chose to do this report on my mother because she has had the greatest influence on me and my life. She helps me so much and I am so thankful to her for home schooling me, I have learned so much from her. For instance, instead of learning that George Washington was the father of our country, instead I know every detail of his life. I would know nothing without her, or I would be in public school and wouldn't know hardly anything! She makes each day worth living and gives me hope. What would life be like without her?

I admire my mother. She is loving and kind. I love her so much. She is the type of mother anyone would want. I also have three brothers. How she keeps up with all of hooligans I don't know! But I know that she loves me and that she will always protect me.A person is supposed to be remembered by their characteristic and their life. Let me tell you that my mother has it all. Serving her children is important to her. I will always remember her as the best person that I EVER met.

She always tells me that I can do anything that I want to do. She tells me I can accomplish anything. I believe her, I can do anything that I want to. For instance, she says that I can make it to American Idol show! And she gives me hope.She gives me hope for a wonderful life yet to come.

When we come in from playing outside she always has a hot dinner on the table. When someone needs dinner she makes it without hesitation! For instance, a few weeks ago she felt like she needed to give her best friend dinner because she had just cracked her rib and couldn't cook.

Hard work never stops in our home. Hard work, love, perseverance and integrity are her standards, and are the standards that I will always remember her by.She always is ready to help anyone in need. For instance, if someone needs a ride some where she will give it.My Mother is so kind and gentle. If I am sick she always takes care of me. For instance if I have been throwing up then she goes to the store and buys sprite for me.She always makes sure that good music is playing quietly in the background. We love celtic,classical, patriotic and
religious music. I know that she expects so much from me and I will try my best to serve her, and give her back all of these years of hard work! I wish I could give her everything back in return. How can you? I will always remember my mother as a kind, loving person.

Thinking of my mother I realize how much she does for me, more then anyone I know. She makes every day worth living. She also helps me to be my best.
My mother is the person I admire. Our home is kept beautiful because of her hard work! She deserves so much more then what she gets.

Life is very complete! Mothers are the BEST!!!!! I am with the most loving person on earth dailey! How lucky am I?

02/09/09 (Mon): Social Day

Today, we took a break from the ordinary and had four boys over for the entire day. It was a lot of fun and I'm happy to say my friend is feeling better now that she had the whole day to sleep. The boys ages were 10, 5, 2 and 1. Olivia did a lot of mothering with the younger two. So no Mom School today, and I really let the kids do whatever they wanted. Oh! Our furnace is fixed now. Yeah. Warmth!

Today the older two kids went to work with their dad. The younger two stayed home and had mom school and did other things with me. Creative Writing/Typing: Worked for over and hour and finished his story on the computer! It's very good. It's 4 typed single pages. We are going to edit it a little bit before he "publishes" it.
Creative Play: Played with Legos for over two hours.

Math: 2 pages from a workbook
Fine motor skills/logic: Cutting and pasting
Spelling: 3 spell drills
Art: Played for another hour in the Moon Sand creating
Reading: Read 1 phonics book to Olivia
Caleb likes to follow Olivia around and do things (like cooking) with Olivia.

Government: Wrote mock bills for a "Day on the Hill" government all day field trip they are going to in Boise in three weeks.

Biography/American History: 8 chapters from Guns for General Washington
Fairy Tales/Fables: Thumbelina by Susan Jeffers. We also read the story of Theseus and the Minotaur.
Memorization: Books of the Old and New Testament, Book of The Book of Mormon, The Presidents of the USA and The Planets of our Solar System.
Family History: Biography of Samuel Ward my gggrandfater
Music: Singing some of the memorization songs.
World History: Chapter 13 from Story of the World vol. 2
Geography: France
Science: 1 chapter from Kingfisher Voyages Oceans. We also learned about astronomy, the moon, Apollo missions, Telescopes, Galileo and Copernicus.
PE: Hours of outside snow fort building
Reading: We take turns reading all of the above material everyday.
Science/Pet Care: Jared and Olivia each have a hamster that they are responsible for. They also take turns caring for our dog, cat and sea monkeys.

12/22/08: SNOW

Today we awoke to a lot of snow. The kids spent a lot of time outside today. They also went over to grandma's for a movie party with the cousins while Aunt Emily cut my hair.

Music: Our community music performance was cancelled due to 2 feet of blowing snow.

Life Skills: Shoveling 2 feet of snow while it's snowing and blowing.

Math: Lesson 75-she's a dire hard-every morning by 6:30 AM she's doing her math.
Writing/Computers/Typing: Wrote a Christmas letter and typed a Christmas program out. Showed me some digital scrap booking tips so I could make the yearbook pages I needed from 2008.
Reading: 30 min of Work and the Glory #3
Art: Made Christmas Cards with Caleb

Jared
Reading: Jared read his self-designated 3X a day. He finished The Book of Mormon Reader.
He was outside longer than anyone today.
