02/25/09: (Wed) Reading Fever

Theology: Chapter 19: Repentance from Gospel Principles.
Book of Mormon Stories: Nephi and his brothers try to get the Brass Plates.

Literature:
"The Taming of the Shrew" from Stories From Shakespeare by Usborne
Greek Myths: "Jason and the Golden Fleece" and "King Midas" from Greek Myths by Usborne
Memorization: 41 states of the USA
Family History/American History: From the Draper Manuscripts "Adventure at Fort Boonesbourough" by William Hancock. This recounts a fight with the Indians at Fort Boonesbourough, Kentucky in the late 1700's. Also present with the Hancock brothers fighting the Indians was their friend Daniel Boone.
Geography: Kentucky
Science: Muscles from The Kingfisher Science Encyclopedia and we started Animal World: Explore the Living Planet by Capella. This is a question and answer book. We talked about Big Cats, Elephants, Marine Mammals, Birds of Prey, and Monkeys to name a few.
Health: Eating healthy snacks from Chapter 6 Eat Well and Keep Moving by Lilian Cheung
PE: We played baseball and basketball at the church for an hour. We also did a warm-up and stretched. I taught the kids some of these sports basic fundamentals.
Science/Pet Care: Jared and Olivia each have a hamster that they are responsible for. They also take turns caring for our dog, cat and sea monkeys.

Religion: 1 chapter in The Book of Mormon
Music: Had her voice lesson.
Math: Lesson 106
Spelling: 1 spell drill
Language Arts: Helping Verbs
Creative Writing: Worked on her essay on My Access!
Writing: Wrote a letter to her pen pals.
Vocabulary: Peterson's Word of the Day-Apocryphal
Free Reading: Read Jane Eyre for an hour.
Life Skills: Swedish Pancakes. She also operated on Jared's in-grown toe nail. See family blog post.

Jared
Religion: Read a chapter in The New Testament Reader.
Math: Mental Math Division-Singapore
Spelling: 1 spell drill
Phonics/Handwriting: 5 pages of Explode the Code
Free Reading: He read for 2 hours and finished Eragon. Yeah!
Writing: Wrote a book review for Eragon on Goodreads.
Creative Play: Lego's and Star Wars

Luke
Religion: Read a Book of Mormon Reader chapter.
Music: Practiced part of his piano lesson.
Geography: Keg legends
Math: Lesson from Saxon 2
Spelling: 1 spell drill
Phonics/Handwriting: 5 pages of Explode the Code
Creative Writing: More on pre-writing strategies and grouping.
Free Reading: He is so excited about reading and finishing his book yesterday that he read for two hours today in a Magic School Bus chapter book. I told him to read some easy stuff right now.
Creative Play: Lego's and Star Wars

Phonics/Handwriting: 2 pages from Explode the Code
Free Reading: Spent an hour reading/looking at a book.
Reading: Read 3 McGuffy Primer lessons to me.

Family (in the evening):
Went horseback riding.

To Show Parent Core/Love of Learner/Scholar here are some things we modeled to the children today...
Deanna: Scriptures, journal, word of the day, practiced the organ, completed and submitted my first monthly report for IDEA (it took a lot longer than I thought it would, but I think it will go faster once I get use to it), and went to mutual.
Alex: Scriptures, word of the day, went to work, installed the DVD player into the suburban-it works now! and listened to The Iliad by Homer.
