Vocabulary Building

My friend Celeste had this on her blog: Peterson's Word of the Day. If you subscribe you will get a new vocabulary word each day in your email box. They include the pronunciation, the definition, the word in a sentence and synonyms of the word. My husband, daughter and I subscribed to it. Even if we don't look at every word every day over time I think we will be able to improve our vocabulary with out a lot of extra effort. Thanks Celeste!

01/23/09: Day on the Hill

Today the older three were able to go to the capital and learn more about our government. They loved it! They each presented a bill they had written and then tried to get it to pass. They learned about parliamentary procedure and the way laws are passed. They were able to meet a Idaho Supreme Court Justice and tour the court room and his chambers. They can't wait to go next year.

While Alex took the kids to that Caleb and I swam and than went to my sisters and hung out with her and her children.

Everyone had a fun day!

01/20/09: Hello Mr. President

I didn't realize until this afternoon that we had missed the changing of power. So we just talked about. I'm sure it has to do with the fact that we never have the T.V. on so we aren't in the know.
Today, Caleb snuck off during Mom School and took a picture of us in action. The picture is crooked, but you can see what it's like. The kids drag in toys, Lego's and whatever else they want for our marathon reading sessions. The mess drives me nuts, but after mom school we put all the toys away-back in their rooms anyway-and everything gets put back together.

rating: 5 of 5 stars
My children love these books. Well, they love listening to them over and over on CD. These books provide a solid historical outline of major historical events. Because my children listen to the Cd's over and over they practically have these books memorized. Once this solid outline is in place it is easy for me to pull a classic book off the self and read it to them and they can understand where in history this fits in. The CD's themselves (narrated by great voices) are on my top 5 homeschooling resources. Teaching World History could not be easier...

01/15/09: Sleep over party

We had another great day today. The kids love learning and reading. I couldn't have a better "job" than doing what I do. I am a mom! Today the kids put up their play-tents that they received from Christmas from one of their grandmas. They've been playing with them since Christmas but today they decided they were going to sleep in them. They are all lined out each in a tent and are listening to some Power Tales as we speak. Happy kids.

Today the kids wanted to keep reading for Mom School and they didn't want to do anything else. So instead of Mom School getting done and 10:30 or 11:00 we didn't get done until 12:30. They just kept throwing books in my lap. Long books too! They were disappointed when we stopped but I was hungry and my throat was done!

I am finding that I really like the books by Aliki. I've been checking out all the books by her that I can from the library. Her books are old so the pictures are all in three or so basic colors and older drawings. However, we are still finding her books engaging and that we like the information.

In this book not only do you learn about corn from a science prospective but there is also a lot of history included.

This was a nice book to expose my children to the epic poem "Beowulf." They liked the pictures and came away understanding one of Beowulf's adventures. We followed the book up with a 30 min video from the library entitled "Beowulf" by Schlessinger Media. The video recounts all three of Beowulf's adventures.
